Mumbai lad Aditya Mittal (7.0) led the field, at the time of going to press, after the 8th and penultimate round of the IIFL Wealth Mumbai International Junior Chess Tournament 2016 held at Mount Litera School International, Bandra (East), Mumbai here today. Gukesh D and Nimdia Ridit shared the second spot with 6.5 points.At the time of going to press, the top board game between Mohammad Fahad Rahman and Sadhwani Raunak was in progress.

The English set up saw neither player willing to risk his chances. After the first time control and four hours of play, the game has ventured into a rook, bishop and two knights end game. Despite even position on hand, both the players are showing the willingness to fight till the very end.

In the second board, Aditya made winning look easy, thanks to his efficient annihilation of Shelke Sankarsha. A series of exchanges just into the middle game, saw Aditya holding a two queen side passed pawns. Exerting further pressure Aditya gained the exchange and was on the verge of promoting another pawn when Sankarsha gave up. The crucial win keeps Aditya on hunt for the coveted title.

The game of the day award - ChessBase gift voucher - for the previous round went to Nimdia Ridit for his game against Aan Sikka. This nine round Swiss tournament has a total prize money of Rs 750000 with the winner getting richer by Rs 150000, the highest in the world for a Junior event. With just one round to go, big fights will be the order of the day tomorrow.
